ATTENDANCE

At Holy Cross we work hard to ensure that all our pupils attend school regularly. Our attendance target for the school is 95%. Happy HERO Horse and her two foals, Fizzy and Fuzzy, are awarded to classes and individuals for good or improved attendance.

HERO stands for:

H – Here
E – Every day
R – Ready to learn
O – On time

Ongoing low attendance is a factor often linked to poor academic progress and many pupils have difficulty maintaining friendships if they have long or numerous periods of absence.

The information below gives you an idea of the impact of long or numerous periods of absence.

90%: 19 days absence a year Pupils in this group are missing 1 month of school per year.
85%: 29 days absence a year Pupils in this group are missing 6 weeks of school per year; it will be difficult for them to keep up with work and they are unlikely to do their best.
80%: 38 days absence a year

Pupils in this group are missing a year and a half of school over the 7 years of primary school; it will be very difficult for them to keep up with work and their friendships may suffer.

It is a parent's legal responsibility to ensure their child is in school.

At Holy Cross we send out Attendance Reports to parents twice a year, in January and July. Persistent absence refers to pupils whose attendance drops below 90%. If a pupil is persistently absent the school’s attendance officer, Mrs Connie Griffin, will make contact with parents to discuss ways in which the school and parents can work together to improve the pupil’s attendance.
